Here I am starting an informal yet serious blog about design!
I am after all a designer and us sort of folk should really keep a blog on ideas. I am an ideas sort of person! I have lots of ideas and I do think a lot of them have gone to waste because I have not written them somewhere. Like a blog!
A note before the actual blogging starts. I will not be screwing around with the colour schemes and putting pictures in. I am keeping to classic white. Because, well it looks at least professional which will help me aim for it to become more professional.
SO! We had a lecture today on kids. And how kids are becoming emotionally and mentally imbalanced with staying inside so much. The main problem was there has been a large increase in attractors to playing inside and alone. This is in the form of TV, video games etc.
Whilst on the outside there are a lot of detractors such as safety and children going out alone.
The idea the lecturer had was to re-introduce a game from the 1940's. The game was about throwing a ball at another player and eliminating people but I won't go into the rules just now.
But reintroducing the game meant that safety gear had to be made and the game had to be overseen by an adult. The game however was better suited to be played by just the children and no safety gear or intervention for adults.
Now this creates a problem. How much of the benefits are lost to try and recreate the game. Much of having children play outside and be healthy body and mentally wise is through the independent growth and lessons from getting hurt. But these are cut off when adults need to intervene, because of health and safety. If anything were to go wrong a parent would sue. This is unlikely but there are people in the world who jump on the lawsuit wagon at the drop of a penny over the smallest wrongdoing.
Unfortunately the game can't be re introduced unless adults intervene so there is no room to negotiate but is the compromise worth it. I guess it helps encourage children to go out and do it themselves.
A better idea would however be to target parents. Really all the attractors for being inside and all the detractors for going outside are directly under their control. Sure there are the odd parents who try their best to encourage it but a kid can't play by themselves so they need other like minded parents to agree. A much simpler solution would be to say get parents to organise going out to a park. Somewhere like Carnoustie park (Angus) is great. I don't know if anyone knows where this is but it is a busy place usually and is a huge park with an adventure playground. Much like Camperdown Park was before a mini theme park was there.
Parents seem to be too scared to let their children run off out of sight nowadays. I would definitely target them.
If you have read this far, well done! If you have any comments, remarks, suggestions, ideas, arguments, ANYTHING! Please comment! I would love to have more views on it in any form.
Thank you!
